I listen to a lot of music when I write. Perhaps in the beginning it was a way of blocking out the noise of hellish traffic when I used to write while stuck in a jeepney in the polluted streets of Manila. Or a way to stay awake while scribbling in a battered notebook at the air conditioned haven of the university library. I do also use music as a trigger, a doorway, to a state or place unknown and easy to be lost in.
I was asked to come up with a sort of soundtrack to How to Make a Salagubang Helicopter & Other Poems. This playlist, then, is not a map or guide. More like breadcrumbs that might lead to the place where the poems first came to be, or where you might end up after reading the book.
